So, I have had a copy of Leela James, 'a change is gonna come', album for a bit. The reason I wanted a copy of it, is because of the song, "music". It sounded good, old school music, but tonight, I am only begining to understand what she is singing about.
I think in the past few years, say 4 years or so, actually about two months before my step-father, Percy, died, I got into soul music. Sure I was into it, hiphop is a good bridge into understanding music, but I was not as deep as I am into soul, now.
I had borrowed a cd from a friend, Jur'ney, and that cd was Otis Redding (google him, he was a true artist, died young though). During that same time I was going through, Percy's 'stash' of music. He had a gang load of music, in vinyl (LP). The collection ranged from Brook Benton, Millie Jackson (aka 'get on down and parte, mind you I didn't say party, but parte), Commodores, Smokey Robinson, George Benson,,, the collection has now become my 'inheritance' so to speak. I still have not listened to it, though, still to buy a LP player.
What I am eluding to is that, soul music has the ability to reflect to your 'soul' as is. There are no "won't you wind for me" (ala r. kelly) but more to the point, "sitting on the dock of the bay, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes." So true, so real, so reflective.
I feel soul, I can immerse myself in it.
